As I grow older, I realize how different my life story is from that of my grandmother’s and her generation. My grandmother has had the fortunate opportunity to be in the same book club for over 50 years. It is remarkable to me that the core group of women has stayed together throughout all these years. I find that it is a true story of both friendship and character. Although each woman grew up in very different homes and countries, the books that they read and discuss tie them all together. Their intellect is astounding at times and their commentaries are never expected.
I have photographed each woman who has been a part of the book club since the beginning. I photographed these inspiring women in their home environment. I have included a close up portrait of each woman as well as them engaged in a book. I also have a photograph of each woman’s reading chair, showing the personal place and a little of the space where she spends long hours reading.
I have used photographs of the collection of books and bookshelves found in each of their homes to divide the book into smaller sections. Furthermore, I have incorporated a bit of the book clubs archives to reinforce the longevity of this book club and remind the viewer of the nature of its past. It was important for me to have the simplicity of the photographs come through while the true complexity of each person’s identity and the relationships between one another is apparent to the viewer.
